Rope Chaise
The Rope Chaise is conceived as a counterpoint to the masculine-coded language of the La-Z-Boy recliner, instead drawing from the chaise lounge as a form historically aligned with the feminine. The piece reinterprets this lineage through a restrained, structural framework, juxtaposing softness and rigidity.
A woven bed of silver rope spans the frame, referencing both textile traditions and the
visual language of metal chain or woven steel. This surface supports a thin, elongated cushion that echoes the proportions of traditional chaise upholstery, while the underlying structure, a boxy, sterile metal frame, asserts a contrasting sense of control and constraint.
Through this tension, the Rope Chaise
negotiates between comfort and discipline, ornament and structure. It positions the body within a framework that both supports and contains, reworking a familiar typology to question how gendered associations are embedded within forms of rest and repose.
